As you look for mentors at
this point in your life, reflect on your previous helpers. Once
you identify who and how they helped you before, you’ll
be better prepared to identify potential helpers who can make
a difference in your life right now. Perhaps you'll also gain
insights into how one or more past mentors effectively assisted
you!!
Who thought you were special? Who went out of their way to help
you develop? What exactly did they DO that was so helpful? Maybe
you didn’t call them “mentors” at the time,
but they fit the modern connotation of the term.
Complete this exercise, and share the results with someone you
trust. If your past mentors are still alive, share the findings
with them and thank them for their generosity! Use the data to
decide what you now need.
| Directions:
Think of your life from early (preschool) childhood. Recall
the key people who mentored or otherwise helped you develop.
On the timeline below, write the names (or roles) the 2 or
3 most important people and what role each played in a specific
phase in you life. State your age for each one and when they
made their greatest impact. (Notice that you can have mentors
at any age.) Analyze one relationship in more depth by completing
the second part below. Share the results with another person. |

For one of these people, indicate what
he/she specifically did for/gave you. (Example: Dad
built my confidence by telling me over and over that I could
be anything I wanted.)
